Tafsil's Tank Engines: GWR

Several models of pure Great Western origin also run on Tafsil; from the tiny auto tanks built especially for auto train passenger workings, to the giant 72xx class of 2-8-2 mineral tanks

Like the pre-group locos, many of these models have been "scratch-built" largely of plasticard. There are some brass or white metal kit built locos in the stud.

GWR class 42xx 2-8-0 tank
GWR No. 4208
These tanks were introduced by Churchward in 1910 for the heavy coal trains in South Wales from the mines down to the docks. In all some 200 were built. No. 4208 was one of the first of this class to be built. Witdrawn in 1959.
GWR class 72xx 2-8-2 tank
GWR No. 7203
After the depression in the late 1920's, the coal traffic in South Wales never fully recovered and many of the class 42xx tanks became redundant. A number were rebuilt with an extended bunker and trailing wheels to become class 72xx. This increased the range and enabled welsh coal to be moved to markets in the South of England. No. 7203 was converted in 1934 from one of the later Collett 2-8-0T's built in 1930.
