Tafsil's Tank Engines: The Imposters Visitors

A number of visiting locos are regularly seen on Tafsil, particularly from the pre-group railways to the South of London. There is no historical reason for this, but it keeps the chairman happy.

All these models have been "scratch-built" largely of plasticard.

LB&SCR I3 Express Passenger Tank
No 24, in LB&SCR umber livery.
The I3 class tanks were introduced by Earle Marsh in 1908 for the London to Brighton express passenger services.
LB&SCR Stroudley Terrier tank
No. 61 "Sutton"
An example of Stroudley's delightful little passenger suburban tanks, introduced in the 1870's. Sutton has the dubious distinction of being the very last to be scrapped by BR in 1963. Ten others have survived into preservation, although some are only on static display.

Another tank engine introduced for the London suburban services in the 1880's. Three of the class (of 71) survived scrapping in the 1920's and worked the Lyme Regis branch until 1960. One survives on the Blubell railway.
Industrial 0-4-0 Saddle Tank
No. 4 "Lady Windsor"
A miniscule saddle tank, once so common in industrial sites all over the U.K., Lady Windsor is frequently employed in the factory section of 'Tafsil'.

LB&SCR Baltic Tank
No. 333 Remembrance.
The last of seven giant Baltic tanks built for the London- Brighton pullman expresses. This locomotive was selected as the memorial to the 530 men of the railway company who gave their lives in the Great War. It entered service at the time of the grouping and retained its photographic grey livery for the whole of 1923.
