Layout 7: Rockies Garden Centre

Not so long ago, Rockies was an abandoned quarry complete with a derelict narrow gauge light rail system. But then a local businessman (and train enthusiast) thought it would make a good site for his expanding garden centre business (he can be seen on the bridge in the middle of the layout using his poser phone!).

The old quarry workings still had some of its 2'6" gauge track in place, and this seemed too good an opportunity to miss, for the owner also had a growing collection of industrial narrow gauge rolling stock.

So now you can buy your plants at competitive prices, and the kids (big and small!) can enjoy a ride on one of the little trains. The track has now been extended into a second part of the old quarry. A single line takes visitors round a small lake, resulting from flooding of the former quarry floor, through a tunnel, which was part of the original workings and back to the main station in the garden centre.

In practice, this layout now extends over two baseboards and always attracts interest from kids at exhibitions. We need an enthusiast to help build up the club's limited collection of 009 stock.
