Prospective new members and others with an interest in railway modelling are welcome to attend any Tuesday or Thursday evening in the clubrooms above Cadoxton Conservative Club, Vere St., Barry (CF63 2HU). Generally Tuesdays are busier evenings with Thursday often devoted to work on the layouts, other than the 'themed nights' on Holton Junction. Please check the programme page for dates of these events.
Visitors are entitled to three free evening meetings before deciding to apply for membership. A standard membership form should then be submitted to the treasurer or secretary and will be considered at the next Committee meeting. The Committee reserves the right to refuse entry of any individual to the club.
It should be pointed out that the club exists to 'promote and foster participation in all aspects of the hobby of railway modelling', to quote from the Constitution. The intention therefore is to help members, especially new members, improve their modelling skills, rather than just to run trains on existing layouts.
To that end, the club does want to foster an interest in our hobby in the next generation. The younger age limit has been set at 11, but all youngsters under 16 must be accompanied an adult member of the club who will take responsibility for the young member whilst in the clubrooms or on club activities.
Several members are skilled in various specialist aspects of modelling, including electrics and electronic control, scenic painting and weathering of stock, carpentry, including base-board construction, repair of mechanisms, kit and scratch building of stock, buildings and so on. There is always someone on hand to offer advice to other members. We are particularly keen to see members trying to devlop themselves. There are a several projects underway, to which new members are encouraged to contribute.
The clubrooms already boast a spray booth and spray painting equipment. Members must supply and maintain their own air brush. A fully equipped modelling room is now available. Some specialist equipment is available in the room, but novices must ask for assistance before use.
Annual membership currently costs £30 per year for Full Members and £20 per year for Associate or Junior Members. In addition members pay £1.50 (50p for junior members) each week that they participate in club activities.
