Barry and Penarth Model Railway Club

Club Open Day

will be held on Saturday 14th November, 2009

Date is now confirmed.

  • It will be held at the Cadoxton Conservative Club, Vere Street, Cadoxton, Barry. (CF63 2HU)

N.B. the road under the railway bridge immediately opposite the Conservative Club is closed for 21 weeks for construction work. Visitors coming from the Cardiff direction driving on the A4055 should take the right fork shortly after Dow Corning's works (on your left) into 'Little Moors Hill'. Go under the narrow bridge and turn left at the top of the hill into Vere Street. The Conservative Club is at the bottom of the hill on the right by the temporary traffic lights.

Watch this web site for further details.

  • The exhibition will be open from 11.00am until 5.00pm. Admission £2.00, under 16s and OAPs £1.50.

  • Three of the club's fixed layouts will be on show and fully working, as well as the Kingswell Fairground. This is the one chance in the year to see them all alive and working. Cadoc Bluff, the former HO American layout is being completely rebuilt to include two spiral inclines, but will not be ready by the time of the Open Day. There will be at least six other layouts from N-gauge to O-gauge, including a number of personal layouts of club members.

  • The event will be supported by local traders. The club's special edition Dapol wagons will be on sale.

  • Refreshments will be available.

The exhibition is held on the first and second floors of the Con. Club, which has no lift access - sorry.

The following club and members layouts are scheduled to appear:

The centrepiece in the concert room on the first floor will be:

  • Walkers Ridge - HO Canadian. Now bequeathed to the Club, this working diorama depicting a logging scene somewhere in the Canadian or American Rockies, was built by the late Brian Scoulding in memory of former club member Capt. Bill Walker R.F.A. (retired), who died in 2002. It has been extended to include the rarely modelled American 'wye' for reversing locos.

  • Cwmderi: A make-believe 4mm/00 gauge layout from our father and son members, Gwynne and John. The layout features a branch line terminus somewhere in the valleys, with quarry reception sidings and trackwork from an adandoned coal mine. The layout is set in the late 1960's and featured in Hornby Magazine at the beginning of this year.

  • Belecke-Warstein - European N-gauge. A new layout with a European flavour built by one of our newer members.

  • The Quarry layout, one of the club's OO9 narrow gauge layouts. Quarry locos work the upper layers with a selection of mineral wagons. Passenger and freight workings share the lower section. This former club layout has been bought by a member who has started to add some sparkle to it.

  • Porthiain. This O-gauge layout was originally built by a former club member, who tragically died of cancer at a young age shortly after this single board was completed. It has now been completely rebuilt with just the baseboard and trackwork remaining. It now depicts a small industrial scene with half-relief buildings. The layout operates as a shunting puzzle layout and you can test your own skills, re-sorting the six wagons with a little four wheel tank engine.

  • Thomas and friends Mike and his son Simon are bringing their own portable layout to allow members of the public, especially the children to run Thomas and co.

The club's resident artist, Dave Woolnough, will also be present with his paints and paintings. He will be bringing his latest layout, which is apparently very long and thin.

Upstairs on the top floor in the clubrooms will be:

  • Holton General, the club's main OO-gauge British outline layout. The top sections of the layout will be operating 'modern image' using Digital Comand Control (DCC). The lower section will run in 1960's mode to demonstrate the differences in passenger and freight handling over the past four decades.

  • Machynlleth, an N-gauge layout with this important Cambrian Railways junction station as it was in the 1950's. There is even a trace of the narrow gauge Corris Railway to be seen at the front of the layout. The room has some photos of the modern day station taken in Summer 2000. Surprisingly quite a lot of the trackplan and buildings still remains. Continuous improvements have been made to the scenery, including a full sheep dog trial, caravan park, cricket match and lots of tourists.

  • Tafsil, the club's main O-gauge layout, whereby the fixed boards (four road engine shed and curved viaduct sections) in three rooms are linked to the portable station boards operating as a country terminous. The traverser and the engine shed area is being completely re-wired to allow increased shunting operation. A wide variety of GWR steam will be in operation, including many locos taken over from the valleys railways at grouping. Look out for some migrants from other railways!!! This is likely to be the last time this layout will be seen in this format.

  • the Kingswell Fairground, which was donated to the club last year by the late Ray Kingswell. This is an extensive fairground mainly constructed from continental Faller kits, with fully working fairground rides and lots of lights and other details.

    DEMONSTRATIONS

For the second time at one of our Open Days there will be a demonstration of live steam G-scale and for the first time a demonstration of Hornby's live steam in OO-gauge

  • details of the other layouts to follow

Traders will include Lord & Butler, and Rickocraft

In addition, club member David Dacey will be selling some of his Dapol limited edition South Wales private owner coal wagons, as well as the club's own wagons

Likewise, club member Steve Davies will be selling some of his collection of railway photographs.
